Modified method for conducting a concept analysis

This assignment presents a modified method for conducting a concept analysis of one concept that is important and useful to the nurse practitioner role.  The concept for this assignment must be supported by a published nursing theory. The selected concept is identified and then the elements of the analysis process are applied in order to synthesize knowledge for application as demonstrated through the creation of a model case. Theoretical applications of the concept are also discussed. Non-nursing theories may not be used. Scholarly literature is incorporated throughout the analysis.

What risk factor does Mr. Bond have for malignant hyperthermia

Case Study, Chapter 18, Intraoperative Nursing Management

1. Pearl Richards, 69 years of age, is a female patient who is in the operating room for a repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The patient has a history of hypertension controlled with medications, osteoporosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and has smoked two packs of cigarettes per day for 40 years. (Learning Objectives 2, 6, and 9)

  1. What nursing interventions are instituted to reduce the surgical risk factors related to the patient’s age?
  2. Explain the role of the nurse in providing patient safety measures during the intraoperative period.

2. Mr. Bond is a 32-year-old Caucasian man who plays professional football. He was admitted for repair of a rotator cuff injury sustained in a game. In excellent shape, Mr. Bond has a muscular build and his body fat is 18%. Mr. Bond is transferred to the operating room, and the anesthesiologist begins to administer general anesthesia. During the induction of anesthesia, Mr. Bond develops tachycardia and dysrhythmias. His condition continues to deteriorate and he becomes severely hypotensive and exhibits decreased cardiac output. The anesthesiologist states that Mr. Bond is developing malignant hyperthermia. (Learning Objective 5)

  1. What risk factor does Mr. Bond have for malignant hyperthermia?
  2. What clinical manifestations of malignant hyperthermia does Mr. Bond demonstrate?
  3. Based on the patient’s condition, the surgical procedure is stopped and 100% oxygen is started. Additionally, a muscle relaxant and sodium bicarbonate are administered. What are the rationales for these medications?

Aspects of therapeutic communication

Due: In an effort to facilitate scholarly discourse, create your initial post by Tuesday 9/21/21 , and reply to at least two of your classmates, on two separate days, by Friday.

Pick an aspect of therapeutic communication to complete the discussion. Here are some example aspects.

  • Boundaries
  • Transference
  • Cultural Sensitivity
  • Non-Verbal Meanings
  • Resistance
  • Alliance
  • Listening and Attending

Initial Post

  • Discuss the problems/barriers that can arise for the topic you have chosen.
  • Identify how these problems/barriers can interfere with therapeutic communication.
  • Discuss how this aspect of therapeutic communication might change to enhance alliance building with individuals who are another culture (choose one).

Replies

Reply to one peers’ post by asking the peer one question about their identified culture as it relates to therapeutic communication. Please do not reply to a student that already has a reply post associated with it. All initial posts should receive one question from a peer. For example, you will reply to one peer and ask them a question as well as answer the question that was posed to you.

The electronic health record (EHR)

Comparing Vendors Part I

As a healthcare leader, it is important to realize you will be tasked to evaluate and select an EHR as part of an upgrade or a new implementation. In either scenario, it is important to be equipped with all the necessary information for a quality assessment of the vendor and platform to be selected.

As such, Healthcare leaders must have access tools, techniques and a solid methodology in place to perform for selecting a vendor. Some organizations plan the electronic health record (EHR) implementation step internally and develop the selection criteria they wish to use. Other practices select EHR software and then begin the planning to support the selected EHR system. Most practices develop an initial plan to identify their key goals, conduct a vendor assessment, select an EHR system that supports these goals, and finalize their plan after the selection. While setting internal goals can be an easy task, conducting a vendor assessment to support the organization goals can be challenging. Some organizations use The National Learning Consortium (NLC), (a virtual and evolving body of knowledge and tools designed to support healthcare providers and IT professionals) to assist with working towards the implementation, adoption, and Meaningful Use of certified EHR systems.

Consider the Vendor Product assessment process.

Include the following aspects in the assignment:

Ø  Create three fictitious vendors for this assignment. All data will be created as you chose. It is suggested to create one each: large and prestigious, mid-range with limited exposure, and small, entry level. Note: the purpose of this assignment is exposure to the tools used for evaluations

Ø  Access the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and navigate to How do I select a vendor section

Ø  Download the Vendor Evaluation Matrix Tool , Vendor Meaningful Use Compare Tool and Vendor Pricing Template

Ø  Assess each Template and comment on its importance in the vendor comparison process

Ø  Using the grading scale on each template, randomly score each vendor. Total up your ratings for each vendor to help make your comparisons. Write the names of the vendors you are comparing in the watermark space provided in vendor columns vendor.

Ø  Summarize your findings in one or two paragraphs

Ø  Some healthcare organization will only use one specific vendor for all desired functionality or select the best technology from several vendors? What are the advantages and disadvantages using each strategy
