Castellino and Cavanaugh Minority Rights in the Middle East

Reading:

  • Castellino and Cavanaugh, Minority Rights in the Middle East, chapter 4 and 5
  • Chase, Routledge Handbook, Part I, chapters 6 and 14

Reflection posts:

  • These should be 500 – 600 words in length.
  • The purpose of these postings is to enable you to think critically about what you’re learning as well as foster an intellectual community of discussion. You are required to integrate readings and themes from the course into your reflections in a coherent fashion. In other words, demonstrate that you have undertaken the readings relevant to the weekly assignment in a timely fashion and that you have critically reflected on these readings.
  • The idea is that you are reflecting on readings and themes for the week. When referring to readings, make sure that they include the readings for the week you are reflecting on! Reflections will be evaluated for thoughtfulness, engagement with the material, integrity, organization, and accuracy of information.

The Assignment:

For this week you have been assigned two readings which focus on “human rights in Iraq and Syria.”  Based on these readings, identify TWO areas where you believe the authors approach the human rights situation in these two cases similarly or differently.  How does this comparison of the readings help better understand the complexities associated with the human rights situation in the Middle East? Explain.

Declaration of Independence as a model

2) Using the Declaration of Independence as a model, write a break-up letter from Obi-Wan Kenobi to Anakin using the information about their relationship that you gained by watching Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith.  I expect you to have lots of details regarding their relationship in the letter.  Remember, like we said in class, the Declaration of Independence has three parts: an introduction, a list of all the things the King/Great Britain did wrong, and then a conclusion.  You can Google it if needs be or use the back of the book I wrote to see.  Model your Star Wars declaration off of the actual document.  This is designed to put you in the Founding Fathers’ shoes as much as possible so you see their logic in what they did.

What did you find out about the topic and about yourself?

You are now engaged in a research project! This can be a very exciting and intimidating process, but you have a great support network to help you.

Take just a moment to think about something you have researched in the past, and describe what that experience was like. What did you research? What were your reasons for researching it? What did you find out about the topic and about yourself? Did you find yourself seeking out primary or secondary sources? What kinds of sources did you use? How did you choose your topic, and what was the result of your research?

Feel free to choose any experience. You do not have to limit yourself to an academic research topic. You might reflect upon research that you did for your job, or you might want to reflect upon a time that you researched a large purchase, such as a new computer or a car.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

You’ve made changes in the essay and the Chen article seems like a useful addition

You’ve made changes in the essay and the Chen article seems like a useful addition

You’ve made changes in the essay and the Chen article seems like a useful addition. And it is still apparent that you are making the point that our privacy is becoming more and more compromised with the new technologies in use and the fact that old data never seems to die. However, as noted here and on the prior draft, work is still needed to introduce and integrate sources effectively. You give Tolentino’s chapter title and her full name, but do not do this with the other sources. And, there is a brief attempt to tell the reader what her chapter covers, but this doesn’t happen with the other authors. If we can somehow discuss this this week, it might help. Otherwise, please see the examples I give in the “Basic MLA” handout and other handouts in Course Information in BB and the Purdue OWL website for help with this going into the 3rd draft, which will be the final draft of this essay in your portfolio.

Raising the federal minimum wage

Raising the federal minimum wage is currently a hot topic in American politics. President

Joseph R. Biden wants to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour but it will require both

houses of congress to approve the measure and based on how this congress is constructed, it seems like it

will be a daunting task.

For this paper, your objective is to write an essay discussing the costs and benefits of increasing the

minimum wage. The paper must include at least 4 credible, scholarly sources as well as a Works Cited

page. Wikipedia is not a credible source! Finally, your paper should be written in Times New Roman, size

12 font, and it should be double-spaced.

Issue in your current major

  1. Reflection: Each response should be one fully developed paragraph in length (5–8 sentences).
    1. What peer-review feedback did you choose to incorporate concerning your argument and why?
    2. What challenges did you face in developing your argument? What could you have done differently?
    3. What peer-review feedback did you choose to incorporate concerning your exploration of the issue and why?
    4. What peer-review feedback did you choose to incorporate concerning your effective source integration and why?
    5. What writing strategies were most effective in supporting your argument, given your audience, subject, and purpose?

What are the two most common ideological frameworks in the United States?

What are the two most common ideological frameworks in the United States? B) I want you to lay out your own ideology. What issues do you care about and what should we be doing about them and why? What political values most strongly influence your position on issues? Discuss at least four issues that are important to you and why.

1) Is government necessary? Defend your answer. There are many forms of government we covered in class. Which do you think gets things done the quickest? The slowest? We talked about how fragile our rights are. It’s hard to amend the Constitution but easy to discount it. Why is it so important for you to respect and protect the rights given you by the Constitution?
