The purpose of this assignment is to give you experience creating a formal, motivational presentation from planning to delivery. You will gain experience selecting and narrowing a topic, researching a speech, and developing speaking notes and an outline. Although this presentation is persuasive, this assignment will help prepare you to make a successful presentation of most any kind.

A persuasive speech attempts to motivate an audience to change an attitude, belief, or behavior. For this reason, your chosen topic should be appropriate for this purpose.

Instructions

  1. Select a topic which advocates involvement with a charitable organization. The topic should relate in some way to issues within communities and/or the environment and be one in which the public can become directly involved. Possible organizations may include, but are not limited to: MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), Wounded Warrior Project, Doctors Without Borders, USA, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
  2. Research your topic. You are not simply telling the audience about the organization. Your research should uncover the problems this organization aims to solve, how they are providing solutions, and how individuals can become involved.
  3. Organize the main points of your speech using a Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (Chapter 15).
  4. Provide adequate support for each main point by citing at least three credible sources in the speech. Incorporate examples, narratives, testimonial evidence, statistics, analogies, explanations, and/or definitions where appropriate. Sources must be cited orally in the speech.
  5. Create an introduction and conclusion.

Written Material

  1. Once you have thought through each part of the speech (introduction, body, & conclusion), create a Sentence Outline of your speech (Chapter 12). Your outline should show the full content of your speech and include a list of References in MLA format.
  2. Create speaking notes to use during your delivery. You should not speak from your outline. Use key words and phrases in your speaking notes rather than complete sentences. Your notes should serve only as a memory aid and should not be a word-for-word manuscript of your speech.

Delivery

  1. Practice your presentation before videoing yourself so that you can deliver the information with only occasional glances at your notes.
  2. Consider asking friends or family members to view your presentation before submitting.

select two of the four groups of offenders and think about the similarities and differences among them.

Discussion 2: Comparing Offender Groups

Identifying characteristics and behaviors of offender groups may aid in understanding, explaining, and preventing criminal behavior, exploring the similarities and differences among these groups may help even more so. As you are aware, there are many types of offender groups. In this Assignment, you compare four of the major groups of offenders: mentally disordered offenders, sex offenders, violent offenders, and family violence offenders.

Offender groups and their subcategories are explained in detail in this week’s resources. As you examine each group of offenders, note various ways that the characteristics associated with the groups are interrelated.

For this Discussion, select two of the four groups of offenders (i.e., mentally disordered offenders, sex offenders, violent offenders, family violence offenders) and think about the similarities and differences among them.

By Day 4

Post a brief description of the two groups of offenders you selected. Then, compare the similarities and differences between the two groups. Finally, explain any insight you had or a conclusion you might draw as a result of comparing these offenders.

Note: Put the offender groups you described in the first line of your post. You will be asked to respond to a colleague who described a different group than you did.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the resources.

What is journalism’s ethical responsibility to society?

Write a 750- to 1,000-word paper that contrasts ethically responsible and irresponsible news reporting.

Answer the following questions:

  • What is journalism’s ethical responsibility to society?
  • When, if ever, is deception permissible in journalism?
  • What ethical obligations do reporters have to their sources?
  • Under what conditions is a journalist ethically obligated to maintain privacy?

Illustrate your response to each question with at least two examples: one example of ethically responsible reporting and another example of ethically irresponsible reporting.

Consider the following:

  • Consider using contrasting examples of coverage of the same issue to highlight differences between journalistic practices that are ethically responsible and irresponsible. You may use case studies from any of the assigned chapters of Media Ethics, or you may conduct external research using popular news sources, issues, and coverage.
  • Remember that this assignment asks you to compare different approaches to news reporting; sources that simply provide opinion or commentary should not be used as examples.

Reference at least two peer-reviewed articles

Most adult audiences enjoy information that is relevant to their own lives and needs. This assignment will give you the opportunity to gain experience speaking extemporaneously, to narrow a topic and organize content using a pattern of organization, and to orally cite sources of supporting material.

Instructions

  1. Select a topic which allows you to inform your audience of a significant aspect of a culture that is different than your own. Possible topics include social customs, family traditions, holidays, clothing, food, religious traditions, and sporting activities. Refer to Chapter 7 of your text as a guide.
  2. Research your topic. Be imaginative in choosing content for your speech. It is not enough to simply summarize basic information from the Internet about a country or culture. Narrow the topic by selecting one specific aspect on which to focus your ideas.
  3. Organize the main points of your speech using an informative pattern of organization. Your speech should give your audience a deeper understanding of your topic, but should not be designed to affect your audience’s beliefs, attitudes, or behavior.
  4. Provide adequate support for each main point by citing at least three credible sources in the speech. Incorporate examples, narratives, testimonial evidence, statistics, analogies, explanations, and/or definitions where appropriate. Sources must be cited orally in the speech. If you have had direct contact with a different culture, you should supplement your research with your personal experience.
  5. Create an introduction and conclusion.
  6. Once you have thought through each part of the speech (introduction, body, & conclusion), create a rough draft outline of the speech.
  7. Create speaking notes to use during your delivery. Use key words and phrases rather than complete sentences. Your notes should serve only as a memory aid and should not be a word-for-word manuscript of your speech.
  8. Practice your presentation before videoing yourself so that you can deliver the information with only occasional glances at your notes.
  9. Consider asking friends or family members to view your presentation before submitting.

Describe Treatment Approaches For Psychological Disorders

Previous Next

In this module, you will explore the concept of treatment for psychological disorders. You’ll consider how treatment approaches differ based on the psychological disorder.

For your initial post, read Chapter 1 of Evidence-Based Prevention. Then read each scenario below and determine which approach would best serve this client and why.

Note: Unlike for the other discussions in this course, you must first start a thread and complete your initial post in order to read and reply to your peers’ posts.

  • Jayden, a 5-year-old boy, is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). His treatment provider is trying to help him increase eye contact with others.
  • Trina, a 50-year-old woman, is diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. Her treatment provider is trying to help stabilize her mood.
  • Desmond, a 22-year-old college student, is diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The treatment provider is trying to help decrease Desmond’s overall level of worry.
  • How does the concept of treatment for psychological disorders apply to any of the following programmatic themes? You may want to review the Programmatic Themes document.
    • Self-care
    • Social justice
    • Emotional intelligence
    • Career connections
    • Ethics

Remember to respond to two peers while being respectful of and sensitive to their viewpoints. Consider advancing the discussion in the following ways:

  • Engage in conversation with your peers around different treatments for specific psychological disorders.
  • Consider asking a question or sharing your personal experience.

What do you make of the criticisms of sex therapy by Thomas Szasz?

  • Write an essay of 200-400 words addressing these questions.
  • Give at least two examples to support your conclusion.

2. Peer follow-up:  Respond to two of your classmates’ postings.

  • In 75-100 words, or more, provide constructive, thoughtful feedback designed to build an engaging dialog.
  • To achieve this, ask questions, share insights, or offer an article or other resource, that will contribute to a broader analysis of the topic at hand.

Explain in a concise professional manner how you would conduct your first meeting with Jennifer

Individuals with somatic symptom disorders tend to have considerable difficulty with how they experience and appraise their bodily symptoms. The illness and the dysfunctional focus and behavior around the illness can assume a central role in the person’s life.

Somatic symptom disorders were originally thought of as “hysterical,” without legitimate medical causation, or as hypochondriasis. Though thinking has changed, negative judgments about unfounded illnesses can still be attached to individuals with these disorders. The boundary between medical and emotional problems can be further blurred. In some cases, an individual labeled with one of these illnesses may simply be experiencing a developing medical condition that has not yet been well defined. For all of these reasons, social workers need to take particular care in diagnosing somatic symptom disorders and in providing a fully biopsychosocial and multidisciplinary approach.

In this Assignment, you describe what that approach might look like for one client.

To prepare:

  • Imagine that Jennifer Brea, whose TEDTalk (TED Conferences, LLC, 2016) you watched, is referred to you for ongoing supportive therapy when her psychiatry consultant decides that she does not have a conversion disorder. Despite the psychiatrist’s opinion, her primary care physician ignores that consult and labels Jennifer with the conversion disorder anyway. Be sure to investigate what the ‘conversion’ diagnosis means when responding.
  • Record your presentation using Personal Capture (record audio, video, and screen). See Kaltura Media Uploader in left-hand navigation menu in course for directions on recording and uploading media.

By Day 7

Submit a 5-minute recorded PowerPoint (5–7 slides) in which you address the following:

  • Explain in a concise professional manner how you would conduct your first meeting with Jennifer. Identify specific steps you would take to understand her circumstance and needs.
  • Explain how you would proceed with her medical team in terms of advocacy for her as a client believed to have this condition.
  • Explain why you would need to take a biopsychosocial approach to her ongoing care.
  • Explain what social, family, vocational, Internet, and medical supports you would explore to help with her longer-term stabilization.
  • Analyze the controversy in diagnosing a mental disorder based on unexplained physical symptoms. Within your analysis, consider how power and privilege influence who provides the diagnoses and which groups are more likely to be diagnosed with certain disorders. Explain your thoughts on this debate.

Support your presentation with research and references to scholarly literature.

Include a transcript and/or edit closed captioning in your presentation to ensure your presentation is accessible to colleagues of differing abilities.
